Once I built out my custom dashboard using Google Sheets (read my blog post on this topic) I decided that I wanted to look at the data for only the last 30 days. While it's important that I have historical data dating back to when I initially put the dashboard together, on most days, I wanted to see quick snapshots of various trends for only the last 30 days.

Childbirth thoughts from one man's perspective

NOTE - This is a blog post that I started writing when my wife and I were at the hospital this past August waiting for our daughter to be born. I started working on this post on Friday, 8/5/2016 at 12:07pm and my daughter was born at 4:13pm that same day. It's been sort of a crazy & a tiring ride ever since her birth so I've forgotten to make my final edits and post this thing. I was a bit hesitant about posting it since it has very little to do with the overall theme of my blog but you know what? This is by far the most significant experience I went through in 2016 and I think it's only right that I post this. Plus, I want to honor & give mad props to my wife for the absolutely amazing work she did in bringing our daughter into this world. Love you.

The "Christmas Gift" test

Ever since I started managing people several years back I've practiced giving Christmas gifts and a hand-written Christmas card to everyone on my team. I intend on continuing with this practice for as long as I'm managing people. Actually, even if I stop managing people at some point in the future I'm going to want to keep up with this practice. I've found that it's such a nice way to say a little "thank you".

Do not store personal data on your work computer

I know that it's often convenient to have your personal files stored on your work computer, especially If you're like me and you spend a lot more time on your work computer than on your personal computer. I actually know some people whose only computer is their work laptop and they store all of their personal files on their work computer. Well, I'm here to tell you that storing sensitive personal data on your work computer is a VERY BAD idea. When it comes to your personal data that you don't want others to look at without your explicit consent, please do not store them on your work computer. The type of personal data that come to my mind are mostly items related to personal finances, such as electronic pay stubs, tax returns, and bank statements. But I'm sure there are many other sensitive personal data that belong in this category as well.

Since landing my first programming job when I was a junior in high school until now, I recently realized that I've now worked at 10 different companies, including my current employer. I thought I'd take some time to reflect on lessons learned from each of the places I've worked at (from oldest to most recent):

I wish DST would end

I really wish Daylight Savings Time would cease to exist. I can't possibly imagine that DST would go away in my lifetime due to the sheer complexities and costs involved with it but a man can dream. Thanks to DST, there are 2 times every year where I'm worried that some program or system that I'm responsible for would go rogue on me due to the sudden shift in time. Just the other day at work, I had to go through every single cron job in our system and verify that nothing horrible would go wrong due to the fact that every second between 1 AM until 1:59 AM will repeat itself or the fact that 2 AM and every second thereafter will take place an hour later than what we've been accustomed to since March 13th of this year. I already know that I'm going to be sort of on edge tomorrow because despite all of my due diligence, there's an elevated risk of some program behaving in a way that I did not expect due to the time change. I hate that twice every single year (and most likely for the rest of my life), I even have to worry or talk about what happens when the clock suddenly shifts by an hour. I'm busy, I already have a lot on my mind, and worrying about time shifting on me is the last thing I would like to worry about.

Be thankful

Last 2 weeks at work have been rough. This most recent sprint as well as the release ended up being much more difficult than what my team is normally used to. There were numerous production issues that had to be dealt with right away and of these, one of the issues required several folks on my team (including myself) to stick around at the office into the evening hours and another issue caused me to work pretty much all day on Saturday. There were some other out-of-the-ordinary stressors at work which I won't get into here but yeah, they have been difficult & stressful 2 weeks. And it doesn't help that my 3-month old is still far from sleeping through the night and I don't remember the last time I woke up feeling rested and refreshed. I am constantly tired. And to add to all this, my wife's been sick for the past week.
